時には昔の話をしようか Let's reminisce about old times

About a week in now touring Tokyo (and some outskirts), i travel on in the company of my good ol' backpack and my camera, in search of something, of which i am not yet sure of.

Aboard my powerful white steed, quick as the wind, speeding me on toward Osaka, I spent a good part of two hours reflecting on all that i'd seen thus far, and realise that i must be getting old, and/or mellow, to have enjoyed the company of a friend as much as i did. Sure, language was a problem initially, but language always is a problem, but never enough to get me comfortable and content with google-type pictures and our singaporean flavour. Perhaps the time for something less familiar?

As day turns to night, the sunset that day draws me out of introspection to admire its beauty. Flirting with me through a clear carriage window, it beckons me closer still. Before i know it i have 7 photos of her. Inspired and with a renewed resolve, i promise myself that tomorrow will be a new adventure...or perhaps tonight?

Arriving off an evening train at Shin-Osaka Station, the silhouettes of my backpack and me merge, and i trudged off onto the platform. As usual i'd look to the ceilings for signs to guide me and as usual i'd feel like a rock in the rapids, commuters surging past me as i sheepishly gather my bearings. Too tired to whip out my phone to get directions, and having spent just about enough time in Japan to learn to trust the locals, i went full ant-in-a-trail mode out of the train platforms and into the central areas of the station. Each new city requires a new mastery of ticketing machines, so i spent some time fiddling about till i was issued a metro ticket from a very polite ticketing machine. As they say, to get what you want in life you just need to push the right buttons.

Following some meticulous directions on Odori's website, i eventually arrived at Bishoen station and boy was i taken aback by the lack of action, especially since all i had seen before was streams and streams of people, and then more people. The area around Bishoen station at 8pm was quiet to the point of me being able to single out the engine of a lonely car slowly rolling through the main street. Just past the dental clinic that long had it doors locked and shutters down, i took a left into an alley, dark as a dungeon. Sensing nothing sinister i continued along and noticed the light at the end of the tunnel (or as it was, 2 lanterns glowing at the end of an alley devoid of activity). This had to be the place. Everything about that scene was 'quiet, peaceful and nestled in a residential area' as advertised.

Any other worries i had would be dissipated within the space of 10 minutes as i entered through the wooden double doors and announced my arrival to the very gentle Satoshi. As soon as it was suggested that registration and check-in could be finalised but only after i joined them for dinner (which was a Takoyaki-party no less), i knew that i was onto a winner.

A nice mix of kimchi and octopus. Where different cultures meet, tastes collide, and a new creation happens.

Not bad for a first-timer, but ways to go before we can set up a stall at the local fair.

Great company leads to a night of laughter and stories.

I meet the assembled cast, the ever-chatty San-chan of Jeju island, Delphine the voice of reason with an edge, Lauren with the quick wits and a taste for art, Akita-san the matronly, and Satoshi the humble. Initial awkwardness is gone the moment we realise we need to learn how to cook the takoyaki balls, for those who don't cook don't eat. Eventually we get handy with the wooden skewers (or satay sticks as we call it back home), and we all have our fill amidst endeavour, failure and laughter.

Alas dinner comes to an end. The rest of the evening is spent in front of fresh fragrant cups of roasted tea for i am too spent this night for alcohol. Also, what a shame it would be should i forget any of this if alcohol is involved. For the first time on my trip it feels more like an adventure than holiday. Stories are bandied around the table, as are snacks acquired on each person's travels.

After I mess about with the in-house guitar for a bit, it is time to turn in. The fires have been lit and the hunger is back. Hello and nice to meet you dear Japan, I want to indulge in all you; and for real this time. I curl up underneath the warmth of a thick quilt satisfied with the events of the evening as slumber embraces me.

Return to my city of Shattered Dreams

Wandering between thought and observation, my heart is pierced into the remnants of shattered dreams. Once again i have returned to the heart of my darkest disappointments, and done so without the loss of a coin tossed over my shoulder into any grand fountain. As i reminisced the long lonesome trudge i took to the Trevi Fountain, my heart imploded, a black hole conjured. sigh...

sigh!!!

sigh!!! i just ran 2.4km on the track and i sadly ran only just below 13minutes! so much for trying for gold timing (9.45)!!
ok i didn't run at hundred percent but rather at an upbeat pace (i'd say 70%)? but 13 minutes is way too slow! have my training yielded no results?

comeon comeon comeon!!

i need some motivation to step it up a notch!

musings

And so, into the night we quietly leave, in search of the sunrise. We know not where we'll find it, but still we go.

Armed with little clues and the heart of an adventurer, we press on to do what we must, to fulfill our dreams, when we do now even know what our dreams are, or where they lie.

What are dreams? Are they things that we tell ourselves are good, and then we want it? or are they things that we tell ourselves we decide we want, and then convince ourselves that they are good? So to put it simply, does the heart direct the mind, or does the mind sway our hearts?

I'm back from HK, where i had a great time. And there i found a new question. What drives us? energy? does everyone have an endless supply? what determines our energy level? does the concept even exist? - what if it was something so much simpler? A system of economics, demand and supply, cost and power?

The morning after 48 hours

Now how did we all get home again? Oho.

Losing control every now and again can be pretty refreshing, especially in good company.

23rd.
It all started with a long-time-postponed lunch with W at LaNonna, and then checking in with the cousin to see how he was holding up against the previous nights' exploits, and then a crazy drive around which caused >$10 ERP damage, and dinner at Lavender, and then a mahjong game to remember (or not), rushing home to pack, getting to the airport to fly.

24.
6am and at the airport, I see Chenann and true to form the ever-dependable aon has brought a spare padlock for my check-in bag. Unfortunately, the padlock was too big for my bag zip, and so I decided to checkin without a lock. Interestingly, Chenann had locked his bag with a lock that wouldn't open.

n00b travelers unite, as me, the guy who checks in a bag with no padlock, traveling with Chenann, who has a padlocked bag which his key cannot unlock.

The day breezed right by as we met Kenny to pick up a keycard to the apartment, stopped at a random cha can ting for lunch, and headed back to Kenny's to settle in.

Having spent an hour 'wowing' over Kenny's pad, I tucked myself in for a powernap as Chenann hit the showers.

When I came to, Kenny had texted me to get my ass over for dinner, and so it was time to mobilize.......

I promised myself to treat myself, and visit a nearby tower. And climbing to the top, I'll throw myself off, In an effort to make it clear whoever what it's like when you're shattered. Standing in a lurch, by the church, where people're saying "my god that's tough she stood him up, no point in us remaining." "may as well go home," as I did on my own...

accident

first bike accident ever. My life flashed before my eyes. But right now after i've calmed down, i'm just a tad shaken up. with nothing except a lack of words and a gash on my shin, i'm pretty much unscathed. And past dinner time, i had been thinking about a myriad of things that could've happen, which could've erased me in a hurry.

truly exhilarating, frightening, and dangerous.
